On June 30, 2016, Sunshine Coast Division of Family Practice member Dr Michael Klein was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada by David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. Recognized “for his sustained contributions to integrating family medicine and maternity care in Canada,” Dr Klein, who divides his time between Roberts Creek and Vancouver, joins 6,500 other Canadians who have earned this honour in the past 49 years.
Dr Klein fled to Canada in 1967 after refusing to serve as an officer in the US Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War and became a family physician, pediatrician, leading researcher in maternity care, and Emeritus Professor in UBC’s Department of Family Practice and Pediatrics.
Other recognitions include the College of Family Physicians of Canada naming him as one of the ”Top 20 Pioneers of Family Medicine Research in Canada” and selecting his landmark episiotomy study as one of the ”Ten most notable family medicine research studies in Canada".
