PNW division member Dr Jaco Strydom wins College Coin award

Pacific Northwest division member Dr Jaco Strydom has been awarded the College Coin from the BC College of Family Physicians for his outstanding work supporting patients in Terrace. Modelled on the coins used by the Canadian military to recognize special achievements, the College Coin is designed to honour unsung heroes in family medicine.

Dr Strydom has provided comprehensive rural generalist primary care for patients over the past 14 years in Terrace. He is highly regarded by patients and colleagues alike and consistently goes above and beyond in the exemplary care he provides. He is also an active physician leader with the Pacific Northwest Division.

As lead physician on the management team at the Park Avenue Medical Clinic, Dr Strydom has dedicated many hours to the clinic’s EMR implementation project, policies and procedures, and numerous innovative projects leading to optimization of primary care supports for patients. In addition, he does obstetrics at the Women's Wellness Clinic, is part of the GP psychiatry rota, and cares for inpatients and long-term care residents.

Dr Strydom sits on the board of the local Child Development Centre, and is also part of a provincial working group to improve services for children with cerebral palsy in BC. He also played a part in the development of the Hip Surveillance Program for BC children with hip dysplasia.

Outside of work hours, Dr Strydom contributes to many charities and boards in the community, including the school Parent Advisory Committee and the North West Therapeutic Equestrian Horse Riding Association, which teaches riding and horsemanship skills to individuals with mental, emotional, and/or physical disabilities.

Congratulations to Dr Strydom on winning this award for his service to patients and the community.
