The Shuswap North Okanagan Division of Family Practice is a community-based group of family physicians working together – and with health authorities and community partners – to achieve common goals. One such goal is providing a primary care provider for every resident who wants one through the A GP for Me initiative.
A GP for Me is a joint province-wide initiative of the Doctors of BC
(formerly BC Medical Association) and the Ministry of Health
. The initiative aims to strengthen the health care system by enabling patients who want a family doctor to find one, increase the capacity of the primary health care system, and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship. Research shows that a strong primary care system, centred on continuous doctor-patient relationships, leads to the best health outcomes for patients.
We were interested in how our community accesses primary health care, how many people currently have a family doctor, and how many are unattached. We launched an online Community Health Care Survey from February 1 to March 31, 2014 and received over 1200 responses. Click below to view a summary of the results and more detailed data from the survey.
