South Island Division of Family Practice

Information for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

Beautiful Vancouver Island, a short flight/ferry crossing from Vancouver on the Canadian west coast, is seeking general practitioners in multiple communities. Surrounded by ocean, Vancouver Islanders enjoy the best year-round climate in Canada with warm summers and very mild winters. From hiking to skiing to golfing to scuba diving, you can do it all on Vancouver Island! The relaxed pace, safe communities, easy access to outdoor activities, arts/entertainment and amenities has resulted in more and more international family physicians and their families now calling Vancouver Island, home.

Vancouver Island's Family Physician Recruitment Collaborative (comprised of 3 organizations: Health Match BC, Island Health and Divisions of Family Practice) can support you throughout the entire process, from attaining your medical licensure in BC to working closely with you to determine your ideal practice environment, and thus achieve the work-life balance you desire for you and your family.

The collective goal of our recruitment collaborative is to ensure that you receive personalized support and expertise in order to make your re-location as smooth as possible!

  • Health Match BC is a free health professional recruitment service funded by the Government of BC, providing tailored recruitment support to physicians seeking employment in BC. Their experienced consultants are available to guide physicians seeking support in applying to the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC for medical licensure.

  • Island Health (local Health Authority) is available to support physicians throughout their job search, facilitating clinic connections that best match your requirements, supporting physicians who require a clinic sponsor & supervisor as part of applications to the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC for provisional medical licensure and/or work permits, as well as other well established programs to support International Medical Graduate 'IMGs' with Return of Service 'ROS' matching, and more.

  • Divisions of Family Practice are community-based groups of family physicians working together to achieve common health care goals. Divisions work collaboratively with community and health care partners to enhance local patient care and improve professional satisfaction for physicians. With 8 Divisions on Vancouver Island (and 35 Divisions in total across BC, representing more than 230 communities), there are numerous ways in which Divisions can support you at all stages of your medical career. These include pre-arrival recruitment & locum matching support (including direct clinic connections/facilitated clinic visits, and community tours), access to practice support staff providing broad business support, tools and resources to improve outcomes for family physicians, as well as access to collegial networking and Continuing Medical Education 'CME' accredited events, medical resident mentoring opportunities and more upon re-location!

The Practice in BC interactive guide outlines the key steps to be eligible to practice as a general practitioner in BC, Canada, and is a good starting point.

Job opportunities span full-time and part-time vacancies in clinics ranging from small solo practices to large complex care teaching facilities, in urban, rural and remote communities.
