BC Emergency Medicine Network

The BC Emergency Medicine Network, a new provincial initiative connecting physicians who care for patients in emergency settings in BC, will launch September 12, 2017. The website, www.bcemergencynetwork.ca is a free online tool where practitioners can access, share and comment on clinical resources. For more information please see the handout (.PDF).

Bugs and Drugs 2017 - Complimentary book for physicians in BC

The BC Ministry of Health has offered to provide BC physicians with a complimentary copy of the 2017 Bugs and Drugs book. The book has been written by Dr. Edith Blondel-Hill and Susan Fryters and has been reviewed by experts in Canada.

Connecting for Wellness

AVI Vancouver Island is offering two Connecting for Wellness groups - one for Friends and Family and one for Peer Support.  Both of these groups are drop-in, and will offer a variety of resources from week to week including support, sharing circles, guest speakers, art and journaling, and other fun activities.  Snacks and bus tickets will be provided.  For details, see the posters attached to each group above.

DTO acts as a trusted advisor, a neutral body and an advocate for information management/ information technology (IM/IT) issues impacting physicians and stakeholders. DTO plays an influential role advocating for positive change in health system transformation which will continue to be more critical as the pace of technological change increases. Family Caregivers of British Columbia is a registered non-profit dedicated 100% to supporting family caregivers.  Most of us have cared for aging, ailing or disabled loved ones and have experienced firsthand the stress, joy, confusion and feelings of purpose that come with caregiving.

Free genetic counseling from BC Women's Hospital for women and men with a family history of mental illness

This is a provincial service provided in Vancouver, via telehealth phone appointments or, with sufficient demand, an outreach clinic. The clinic is the first of its kind in the world, launched by Canada Research chair and genetic counselor Jehannine Austin. Referrals are welcomed from all health care providers. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) will now be available in the Western Communities. An 8-week MBCT group session is scheduled for May and June, 2018, co-facilitated by Marisa Collins, MD MHSc CCFP FCFP, and Matthew Biehn, MSW RSW. This MBCT program is offered by Mindfulness West in partnership with the Westshore AVI Health Centre, 111-2787 Jacklin Road in Langford.

New stage 3 sober house for women open in the Westshore

This is a 3 bedroom home where women live drug and alcohol free within a safe, supportive environment. The goal is to assist women while in their early recovery stage to learn how to live a sustainable, abstinent lifestyle. Click here for more information (.PDF).

ON TRAC Website and Youth Tool Kit

The ON TRAC initiative was developed to help youth, young adults, families, and health care providers work together to ensure a smooth, safe, continuous, developmentally-appropriate transition from pediatric to adult care. One of our first steps towards accessible knowledge for youth was the creation of the Youth Toolkit, specifically designed to help young people assess and acquire the skills they need for a successful transition.

Based on clinical tools, parent feedback, and youth advisory engagement, we're excited to announce that the Youth Toolkit is now available online. For submission, feedback or involvement in project areas, please e-mail info@ontracbc.ca.

Perinatal Services BC

Perinatal Services BC (PSBC) is sharing two new practice support checklists on prenatal and postpartum care that were developed by the Vancouver Division of Family Practice and adapted into a PSBC provincial resource with their permission and collaboration.

The checklists have been developed to support all family physicians, whether providing episodic care or full service family medicine, to provide optimal early antenatal and postpartum care. The checklists include recommendations based on best evidence and expert consensus opinion. The antenatal care recommendations are derived from the BC Maternity Care Pathway (PSBC 2010) where levels of evidence can be found.
