What You Should Know About HIV PrEP

Do you have patients at risk for HIV? Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP) is the daily use of antiretroviral therapy (usually Truvada) to prevent HIV. It is free for patients, and simple to prescribe. When taken consistently, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV by over 90%. PrEP is recommended and fully funded for individuals having condomless anal or vaginal sex OR sharing injection drug equipment AND (a) recent syphilis or rectal gonorrhea/chlamydia, (b) history of non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis, (c) unsuppressed HIV-positive sexual partner, or (d) HIRI-MSM score ≥ 10.

Tools for starting a patient on PrEP can be found through SmartSex

The BC Centre for Disease Control has launched several new resources on its provincial sexual health website (SmartSexResource) to support and inform clinicians, clients and community, on the enrollment and/or ongoing use of HIV-PrEP.
